The last three concerts of the Y2K season started
with an outdoor performance on a balmy summer night
at Sunhill Park in Clevedon. CWB had a half-hour set
either side of The Vera-Neka Big Band as part of the
Clevedon Lions Festival Week.
Denise White conducted the band in a programme of
pops, rather than classics, which went down well with
a relaxed audience who clearly enjoyed the fine weather,
fine music and the bar.
Next came the Clevedon School Extravaganza. In the
hall, to the band's relief. A small, but appreciative
audience encouraged CWB to a particularly enthusiastic
performance in the second half.
Everyone was especially impressed by Clowance Lockyer
(one time CWB flute player and now student at the
Northern School of Music) who demonstrated her great
ability playing xylophone and percussion in two solo
spots.
And finally...what, after the cancellation of the
Grand Atlantic concert, was to become conductor Andrew
Tyrrell's last concert with the band...Elm View Nursing
Home
...numb fingers clutching at clothes pegs...music
fluttering on a blustery breeze...envious glances
at the residents, cosy inside the open French-doors
...spots of rain deciding the last item...warm tea
and kit-kats indoors after...and perhaps a warm feeling
inside from the smiles on those old folks' faces.
Amid the burning questions: Did they sing along
to 'My Way'? and Did they all chant 'I Will
Survive'? one thing's sure, 'Tequila' got them humming.
