- and Some Bad News  back to News Archive

Invited to perform a second time at what is now an annual event, Cadbury Wind Band showed that it's really going from strength to strength. Conscientious practice at home and intense rehearsal meant the band tackled the technicalities of classical works, like Holst's Second Suite in F, without losing the subtleties.

A recent increase in the brass section by has given a powerful and confident approach to pieces like the Tom Jones favourite 'It's Not Unusual'. The veritable population explosion of saxophones of all kinds means the band can give a convincing rendition of two 'Blues Brothers' favourites - 'Everybody Needs Somebody' and the Peter Gunn theme.

Solo spots ranged from a cheerful flute trio (Jenny, Jemima and Sarah) playing Tchaikovsky's 'Dance of the Reed Flutes', through an adagio from a Sammartini recorder sonata (played by Roger, with Clare on piano) to a medley of Elvis Presley songs sung by Mike Joce. A special mention should go to the band's newest drummer, Trev, who had a large number of pieces to learn in a short time and acquitted himself very well.

A special mention also needs to go to the person who has pushed, persuaded, cajoled, teased and joked the band to its present level of quality and commitment - the conductor and director of music, Andrew Tyrrell. Unfortunately, for personal reasons, Andrew has come to the difficult decision to give up some of his 'extra bits', including CWB! Just when they were actually learning what he was there for.

The band won't be left in the lurch, though. Mrs Emma Frost, horn player and conductor of North Somerset Schools Concert Wind Band, has agreed to take over the baton. Reports are that she's good...so here's hoping the band can continue to build on its growing reputation.
