Wednesday, 2nd February, 2000 saw CWB taking part
in (reputedly) their best concert yet at the Burgundy
Suite of the Cadbury Country Club in Congresbury.
Alternating sets with Bristol Big Sound, a talented
group specialising in big band jazz, they produced
a varied and complementary programme. The packed auditorium
enjoyed pieces ranging from Khachaturian's Waltz from
'Masquerade' to selected James Bond themes. Special
treats came in the form of a trombone and piano piece
from Dan Clegg and Clare Mills, with virtuoso page-turning
by James Morgan, and a flute quartet accompanied by
Andrew Tyrrell on a bangy thing. (Andrew later showed
his versatility and agility by playing a metal dust-pan
whilst conducting his own arrangement of 'Kwela: Love
me Baby' and blowing a whistle at the same time).
'Everybody Needs Somebody', from the 'Blues Brothers',
complete with the band's secret ingredient, went down
a storm. People were on their feet dancing...Everybody
seemed to enjoy themselves.
The turn out was fantastic, thanks to the efforts
of people selling tickets and good publicity. Profits
from the night will be split 50-50 between The Yeo
Valley Lions, a local charity which works on behalf
of a number of good causes, and the two bands which
both rely on public performances to pay for new music
(which is now more than £30 a set).
